Frequently Asked Questions
Why buy a Tandem Axle trailer over a Single Axle?
Tandem trailers have two axles (4 wheels), which provides superior stability, less bouncing on highways, and a much higher load capacity (usually 2000kg ATM). They also track better behind the car, making them safer for heavy loads.
Do Tandem Axle trailers require brakes?
Yes. By law in Australia, any trailer with an ATM over 750kg must have brakes. Meltrailer tandems come standard with mechanical override disc brakes (rated to 2000kg) or electric brakes (for 2000kg+).
Can I tow a Tandem Trailer with a Ford Ranger or Hilux?
Yes. Most modern dual-cab utes have a towing capacity of 3000kg-3500kg. A loaded Meltrailer Tandem (2000kg ATM) is well within the safe towing limit of these vehicles.
What happens if I get a flat tyre on a Tandem Axle?
One advantage of a tandem is safety redundancy. If one tyre blows, the other tyre on that side can often support the load temporarily, allowing you to pull over safely to change it.
Are your Tandem Trailers suitable for carrying machinery (Mini Excavators)?
Yes, but you need a specific setup. For machinery, we recommend our Plant Trailers or flat tops with reinforced ramps and floor supports to handle the point-load of tracks.
What is the "Rocker Roller" suspension on your Tandems?
Rocker Roller suspension links the two axles together. When one wheel goes up a bump, the suspension pushes the other wheel down, keeping all 4 wheels on the ground. This provides a much smoother ride than standard slipper springs.
How heavy is a Tandem Trailer (Tare Weight)?
A standard 8×5 galvanised tandem trailer weighs approximately 450kg-550kg empty. This means you have roughly 1.5 tonnes of legal payload capacity on a 2000kg ATM trailer.
Can I upgrade a Tandem Trailer to 3000kg or 3500kg?
Yes. We can build custom heavy-duty tandems with solid axles, electric breakaway brake systems, and heavier springs to increase the ATM to 3500kg.
Is a Tandem Trailer harder to maneuver by hand?
Yes. Because of the four wheels scrubbing against the ground, turning a tandem trailer by hand is very difficult. We recommend fitting a high-quality jockey wheel to assist.
Do you sell cages for Tandem Trailers?
Yes. We offer 600mm and 900mm hot-dip galvanised cages. These are essential for tradies carrying loose materials or rubbish to the tip.
